If you group by date and delete the first message in the group, and then undo
the delete, you can get the newly undeleted message in the wrong place in the
thread pane.

David, is this still a problem? A quick test with TB 3a1 didn't show any wrong symptom, but there are no steps-to-reproduce here.
WFM Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2pre) Gecko/2007120303 SeaMonkey/2.0a1pre - message restored to correct location, and grouping unaffected.

WFM also TB version 3.0a1pre (2007120303)

but older thunderbird fails, version 3.0a1pre (2007112004) - can't tell if message is misplaced because undo delete (and undo move) cause Group to be disabled/off.
