The ICS output from calendar created in Mozilla Calendar (I use the thunderbird
plugin) is all mangled (see attachement). When I try to import it in Mac iCal,
it says the file is not a calendar.

However, stored copies of remote calendars are fine.

What version of calendar are you using?
See Help | About Calendar, should be something like 2004MMDDHH-cal

This sounds like Bug 259956, but attachment 162692 [details] does not seem to have the
\r\r\n line endings.
