User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; ru-RU; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041022 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; ru-RU; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041022 Firefox/1.0 I'd like to ask for approval for the change of search plugins to be shipped by Firefox in Russian (ru-RU) by the branding team in regard to the localisation trade mark policy. According to the policy, plugins may only be localised and not changed. However, these makes little sense in Russian for several of the plugins. Included in en-US are: Dictionary.com eBay Let me explain why these may not be the best choices: Dictionary.com: This is an English-English dictionary. It makes no sense to include it in a localised build. eBay: it is not available in Russian. I don't think very many people would use it. Furthermore, Russian packages have contained additional search engines which some have come to expect. These are: Yandex (yandex.ru): this is one of most popular and most used search engine in Russia; it is in a way quite similar to Google in Russian. Aport (aport.ru): another popular and wide used search engine in Russia; Rambler (rambler.ru): very popular search engine in Russia; Multitran.ru (Multitran.ru): Very popular online Russian-English dictionary. Contains more than 5 millions terms; Price.ru (www.price.ru): This is very popular site where one can find all kinds of price lists for computers, hi-tech equipment, office equipment and much much more. If anyone want to buy anything hi-tech - first of all he goes to price.ru; I've put mentioned search plugins at zip-file at http://mozilla.ru/unghost/firefox/proposedsearchplugins/ru-RU.zip Also they can be found at http://mycroft.mozdev.org I should much appreciate it if you could look at them and see if they are appropriate for inclusion in the Russian localisation. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

I can confirm that Yandex.ru and Rambler.ru must certainly be included. They are highly respected serious companies that have successfully started their business in the searching area many years ago, and still hold a very significant market share (yandex -- 51%, rambler -- 28%, google -- 11%, according to http://gs.spylog.ru/). (I believe, Aport is still in the top-five search engines in Russia.) As for the dictionary, I'd suggest to include lingvo.yandex.ru. It is more professional and mature than Multitran.ru, and Lingvo is provided by serious companies (yandex.ru and abbyy.com/abbyy.ru). eBay -- I've never heard of anyone in Russia using it, definitely should not be included in the Russian build. Amazon, Yahoo -- I believe, very few people in Russia use these, if any at all. I hope this helps to get started. My summary: * Yandex and Rambler are a must for the Russian Firefox 1.0 * dictionary.com should be replaced with lingvo.yandex.ru * eBay, amazon, yahoo should not be included Constantine

> My summary: > * Yandex and Rambler are a must for the Russian Firefox 1.0 > * dictionary.com should be replaced with lingvo.yandex.ru > * eBay, amazon, yahoo should not be included > Constantine, I think that Yahoo search engine can stay in Russian search plugins. Site http://ru.yahoo.com/ exist, it has Russian interface and Yahoo have good search database. There is no equivalent of Amazon.com in Russia. I'm not sure how many people use it - I think it doesn't hurt to have Amazon.com in search engines. However I agree with you about lingvo.yandex.ru and ask to change my request from Multitran.ru to lingvo.yandex.ru I'm worried about status this bug. Can someone take a look at it? Time is running short for 1.0.

Alexander, I think the idea of Firefox is to minimise user's interface and remove all unnecessary items. Leaving amazon.com and yahoo is all right, but does not really match with the ideas of Firefox, as very few people in Russia use yahoo, and amazon.com does not even have a Russian interface. > I'm worried about status this bug. Can someone take a look at it? > Time is running short for 1.0. I think the standard procedure is to attach a patch and ask for "approval-aviary1.0". If you aren't yet familiar with cvs, just attach your updated zip here, and set "approval-aviary1.0" to "?". If you can do that, I think it'll get into the tree sooner rather than later.

Proposed set of search plugins in tar.gz file

Rafael, please tell us about yahoo here. http://world.yahoo.com/ doesn't list russia, but http://asia.yahoo.com/ says that ru.yahoo.com would be "U.S. in Russian". Putting this on your lap for a reply on wether we need that or not. Alexander, I'd rather see only one search engine per purpose, so just one portal. I'd be fine with price.ru and lingvo.yandex.ru. Rafael?

(In reply to comment #6) > Alexander, I'd rather see only one search engine per purpose, so just one >portal. Axel, I can remove Aport and Rambler, but please don't make me to remove Yandex. It's the MOST wide used and respected search engine in Russia and it would be a bad decision to remove it. See comment #6 for Russian search engines rating. I'd like to have Rambler too, so, in case if Rafael decides to remove Yahoo, can we have too?

What you have proposed is fine. Don't need to include Yahoo.
