PROBLEM:
When I run checksetup.pl I get a following error:

Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider
upgrading MySQL client.
------

SOLUTION: 
This is probably because you are using a new password encryption that comes with
MySQL 4.1
Here is an easy fix available from MySQL docs: 
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Old_client.html
