User-Agent:       Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040910
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040910

I populated my user.js with the browser.download.finished_sound_url option:
user_pref("browser.download.finished_sound_url",
"N:\\sbirl\\aim95\\Sounds\\Ogpissd5.wav");

No matter what sound I choose on any drive, the default system sound is used.

This preference is copied to the prefs.js file.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. open either user.js or prefs.js
2. create a new entry
user_pref("browser.download.finished_sound_url", "Drive:\\path\\to\\sound.wav");
3. restart Mozilla
4. download something.

Actual Results:
I hear a "bing" when the download completes.

Expected Results:
I expect to hear a WarCraft II two-headed ogre.
Um.. The preference is a URL, clearly named to indicate this. You're not
putting in a URL. You're putting in a filepath.

I have no idea why you're editing this by hand instead of using the preferences
dialog either...

1) Just because it says URL as part of the variable, doesnt mean it's limited
   to strictly URLs.
   Case and point:
user_pref("editor.history_url_0", "file:///N:/sbirl/bookmarks.2002.htm");
user_pref("privacy.popups.sound_url", "N:\\sbirl\\AdSubtract\\Human\\popup.wav");

  But I changed it to a URL anyway:
user_pref("browser.download.finished_sound_url",
"http://concept.temple.edu/Ogpissd5.wav");

I even changed it to
user_pref("browser.download.finished_sound_url",
"file:///N:/sbirl/aim95/Sounds/Ogpissd5.wav");

Still uses the default system sound.

2) Where, oh prey tell, in preferences dialog is there an option to set the
   sound for the download manager?
   I searched the whole dialog box and found nothing.
   AFAIK, this setting was a hidden feature.

Actually, yes, it does.

Which is a URL...

> user_pref("privacy.popups.sound_url",
> "N:\\sbirl\\AdSubtract\\Human\\popup.wav");

Which is NOT a url.

Preferences > Downloads. Check "play a sound", click the "browse" button, and
browse for the file. It looks like this UI has been added after 1.7. I hadn't
realized quite how new it was.
This version of Mozilla does not have an option to pick a sound.
I found the option via Preferential.
Birl> user_pref("privacy.popups.sound_url",
"N:\\sbirl\\AdSubtract\\Human\\popup.wav");

Boris> Which is NOT a url.

<sarcasm>
And yet that particular preference still works as expected! How odd!
</sarcasm>

Regardless, it does not work after trying 3 different values.

As for the preferences box, see the attachment. It does not exist in my
1.7.3 browser.
