I thought there would already be a bug on this one, but I searched and didn't find one. Its not possible to delete or rename custom made toolbars.
This is after the fact, but after searching bugzilla I found that removing all items and hitting ok, the toolbar is automatically removed. This is still a problem because most users don't know that removing all the items and hitting done will remove the toolbar. If there is a more intuitive way, great, but my thought to solve this problem is to detect when a custom toolbar has been created (or is in existence) and add a line of text below the "Add New Toolbar" button saying, "To delete a custom made toolbar simply remove all items from the toolbar and hit the Done button."

Faced the same problem. A bigger problem is that I just hit the "New toolbar" button, name it and press the done button. I go to View > Toolbars and can't find my toolbar out there! Its very very confusing. If you need to retain your empty toolbar, just add a SPACE "item" to it. Again a hack. How about renaming a toolbar Mark? How do we do it? I would suggest that there be some button, menu item to do that.

Because there is already the functionality for deleting a toolbar when it's empty, it shouldn't be that difficult to implement an explicit option for this. And as Prakash already mentioned before it is confusing for users when the freshly created toolbar is deleted when closing the customization dialog, just because it doesn't have any items in it yet. In this case I'd suggest to show a confirmation request to the user, if he really wants to delete it.

The current versions of Firefox don't have custom toolbars anymore, so I guess this old bug is obsolete.
