Did you read system requirements before trying?
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/system-requirements.html Mozilla.org
public FF builds are xft/gtk2 builds, neither of which are included on my SuSE
8.2 box. Unfortunately, the homepage download link doesn't bother to mention
xft/gtk2. Even if it was to install you wouldn't like it unless you enabled
fontconfig and gtk2. You might try untarring the tar.gz download from ftp, then
try to run it from a shell prompt to see better error messages if it fails to start.

Yes, I did.
I have installed both gtk2 and fontconfig (called xft on SuSe)..... same
result.

Where did you find xft? I opened yast2 in SuSE 8.2 and did a search for both
fontconfig and xft in name, summary, description, provides and requires, and it
found neither, as did grep in output of 'rpm -qa'.

Oeps ...... what I found and loaded was 'xftp' - this may not be quite the
same as 'xft'............... Ýou're right - there is no fontconfig or xtf on
SuSe 8.2.....

SuSE 9.0 and up do have xft/fontconfig and gtk2, and probably have RPMs of FF
available. You can probably build from source without it. Since 8.2 doesn't have
xft/fontconfig -> invalid.
