Details

found using 2004110312-0.9 bits on Mac OS X 10.3.5.

1. start thunderbird and look at the View > Layout submenu. by default, the
Classic view is selected (has a checkmark).

2. open Preferences > General.

3. in the Layout section, select either the Wide or Vertical view.

4. click OK to save and dismiss Prefs. as expected, the layout of the 3pane
window changes to your choice in step 3.

5. look at the View > Layout submenu again.

results: both the Classic view and the view you selected in step 3 have checkmarks.

expected: you shouldn't see two checkmarks there, only one for your layout choice.

if you quit and restart, the "extra" checkmark (next to classic) goes away.
this works for me in my magical cadence machine.

This is also a dupe of a bug I fixed for 0.9 on the Mac if I can find it. Weird.
this is really a dupe of Bug #223408 which supposedly fixed this on the branch
and the trunk. I used to see this problem before I landed that fix then it went
away....
