User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041026 Firefox/1.0RC1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041026 Firefox/1.0RC1 Trying to open a .doc attachment, Thunderbird 0.9 just tries to save it (it doesn't open it even after saving it). It appears to have the same functionality as "Save as..." Double clicking the icon, or selecting "Open" from the submenu have the same effect as selecting "Save as..." from the attachment submenu. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Select an email with an attachment (it happens in both the main screen or on a standalone mail window). 2. Double click on an attachment or select "Open" from the attachment submenu. Actual Results: Thunderbird tries to save the file (and if I save it it doesn't open it either). Expected Results: Open the file in the application defined by windows.
Summary: Open attachment does not open, but saves the attachment → Open attachment does not open, but instead saves the attachment
Found some other data to this bug: In preferences/attachments/file types, I have "DOC" (Microsoft word document), assigned to "Save to disk". But, I want to open it when I press "open" in the attachment submenu. Is this behaviour correct? When I double click an Excel attachment, it does open in excel (doesn't ask me, just opens, and it doesn't appear in the file types dialog). In few words: Thunderbird saves the DOC file when I double click it (correct), but also saves (doesn't open it) when I click "Open" in the Attachment submenu (Incorrect I think).

This is has not been resolved. I am usign the client to access IMAP mail. I've never been able to just click on an attachment to open it. Every single time I am forced to save it first. This bug should be reopened.
Steve VanSlyck, do you still see a problem if using version 3?
Works OK in Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.5.
