Actual Results: Message window sorted by group. Expected Results: Allowed a G in search string.
A bit more. Searches will work normally (with the G) until you do the first "sort by group". Then, after that, any "G" will change it to sort by groups.
Summary: Can't use 'g' in search toolbar. → Can't use 'g' in search toolbar.
Also, if you close the thunderbird window, without closing the app, this goes away. So, steps to recreate: 1). Sort by groups. (View->sort by->Grouped by sort 2). start typing in search bar 3). Group by sort is activated when G is typed 4). This continues even after click on one of the sort by headings

I have this problem, too. It appears that the shortcut key command for "Group By Sort" is "G" rather than "Apple-G" or "Ctrl-G", for example. This does not occur on the PC version of Thunderbird. The other windows (message window and find window, for example) are unaffected.
I also have this problem when typing "t". A workaround is to used shift-g, and shift-T when searching in the quick search box

Often cant use " " or "c" or "r" either.... sometimes when typing in the quick search box, the keyboard focus is still (sort-of) back in the other windows and these keys are shortcuts to next or catchup or mark-as-read. This also means you can accidentally mark a whole heap of email as read by typing into the quicksearch! This bug is definitely present in v. 1.0 running on Mac OS 10.3.8

Reproduced with TBird v1.0.2 on Mac OS X v10.2.8 in IMAP mode. The quick search gets the keystrokes fine until the Message>Mark sub-menu (with 'R' or 'C') is displayed. Alternately, using the G, R, C, J, etc. keys on a selected message then directs future keystrokes away from the quick-search box, even when it has focus. Easy to reproduce for me.

I find this true for all single-keystroke shortcuts: f, n, t, b, p,m,r, c, j,... I would suggest that either all keyboard shortcuts require a modifier key (such as Shift) or that keyboard shortcuts are disabled when the Search field is active.

I agree, this is very similar if not identical to bug 306696, which I filed yesterday. A bit of extra info on this. Yesterday after filing the bug report I uninstalled TB1.0.5, then installed TB1.0.6. This seemed to fix the problem. However today, after the computer was in "sleep" mode all night, the problem reared its head again, same symptoms as before.

One more piece of additional info I just found. After filing last comment I quit TB, then started it again ... and the problem went away. So, this may have to do with stale handles or something like that. Either way, this may be a workaround for some.
