You cannot prevent messages as being set as read with deselect advanced option
"mark message read after displaying for ... seconds"

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. deselect "mark message read after displaying for ... seconds" unter options
=> advanced
2. select a message

Actual Results:  
message changes to "Marked as read"

Expected Results:  
Message should stay unread

The only "solution" for me for that is set a time like "999999999" to have the
messages unread for years, but that's very unpleasant alternative
