User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041103 Firefox/1.0RC2 Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 0.9 (20041103) Some character keys will not insert into the search box, but rather highlight menu bar menus. e.g. "m" highlights "Message" and "g" highlights "View" (that's right "g" NOT "v". I seem to recall seeing this behavior in version 0.7 (not sure if it was all the time then). The problem was not present in 0.8. The problem occurs on a Powerbook running OS X 10.3. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. select an inbox folder 2. click in the quick serarch box result: cursor blinks in the search box 3. type the "m" key result: the "Message" menu title on the menu bar hightlights momentarily, no "m" is inserted in the search box expected result: an "m" should be inserted into the search box Actual Results: the "Message" menu title on the menu bar hightlights momentarily, no "m" is inserted in the search box Expected Results: an "m" should be inserted into the search box with no attempt at menu selection

(In reply to comment #0) I see same bug, but unlike Rob am unable to reproduce it using his recipe or other sequences of actions; it hits me at random times. Same platform/versions: MacOsX 10.3, Thunderbird 0.9 and previous. I use thunderbird daily and only see this about monthly. Also tried version 1.0 (20041206), and failed to reproduce bug, but that doesn't prove it's been fixed. Workaround: use SHIFT key to enter misbehaving letters like FBNPG (search is case-insensitive). Closing the mail window and reopening it cleared the problem. -- Denis --

Confirming, saw this today on Thunderbird 1.0 on MacOS X 10.3. The problem vanished after restarting the program. There are some more instructions to reproduce the effect in bug 274004 (which may or may not trigger the effect). Setting severity to minor (easy workaround, see comment 1).

updating summary to better reflect the behaviour
Summary: typeing in search box activates menu items rather than inserting characters into search box → typing certain characters in quicksearch box activates menu accelerators

I see this on mac branch. It may very well appear on trunk as well, but since it's a very intermittant problem, it is rather hard to reproduce. I've seen it in other text input fields as well, such as the textbox to name a new virtual folder. This is a pretty serious bug and makes several features unusable when it occurs.
Summary: typing certain characters in quicksearch box activates menu accelerators → [MAC] typing certain characters in quicksearch box activates menu accelerators
