found this on Linux Fedora Core 2. not a problem on Windows XP or Novell Linux
(on Asa's box), as the previous default homepage is overwritten. in my case, the
homepage URL is empty, not even about:blank.
1. create and launch a new profile with firefox 1.0PR
2. go into Preferences > General and note that the default homepage is set to
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/start/ --then dismiss Prefs without
changing it.
4. in about:config change app.update.url to
http://update.mozilla.org/update/firefox/en-US-1.0-rc.rdf
5. close about:config and reopen Prefs > Advanced > Software Update
6. hit Check Now button: follow the steps to update to firefox 1.0RC2.
7. quit and restart firefox.
actual results: the home page is blank. if you look in Prefs > General the
homepage textfield is empty.

expected behavior, as observed on WinXP and Novell Linux:
when the homepage is the default URL
(http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/start/ --ie, not changed) it does get
rewritten to
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
