There are many things I find annoying about the Thunderbird toolbars. The most obvious of them is that: 1) The default large icon set is larger than other similar applications (Mozilla Firefox, Outlook Express, ...) 2) Changing the main toolbar preferences (such as setting small icons) does not propagate to other toolbars such as the compose window Making the default icons a reasonable size would be a good start, but I would hope that such preferences as "Icons"/"Icons and Text"/"Text" and "Small Icons" are consistently applied to all toolbars in the program, as they are in Outlook Express, GNOME Desktop, and other applications.

I don't think the icon set is actually larger (in Thunderbird 1.0 anyway) but the amount of space around the icons is greater than in Firefox 1.0. Closing the spacing gap around the icons and changing the throbber so that it resizes upon moving it to the text menu bar (default throbber location in Firefox) should resolve this. Should be relatively easy to modify the button spacing using userChrome to test this out.
