Details
From bug 236701. Bad typing of file://C|/ URL (with two /'s not three) seem to confuse Firefox orWindows to the point where the -chrome option ceases working. That side-effect is a blocker for XUL development on this platform. /// might be correct and // technically wrong, but people will type // a lot, and the consequences are subtle, confusing and disabling. The file: syntax is confusing enough as it is with C| substituting for C: and lots of slashes for apparently no reason. Firefox should do forgiving URL fixup if the wrong number of /'s after file: are supplied. See also bug 133700.

Test case steps too subtle to reproduce easily. Closing here until I stumble across it again. - N.
