Also seen this bug on several websites, alt + tabbing also helps to show the content again. Also happends with Real Player. Branch build 20041105, Windows XP.

This also happends when a movie starts and you click the url bar, then the image will disappear and only sound will be available. Using WMP 10. There are other bugs filed for this I will try to find and dupe.

I can reproduce this every time... Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050621 Firefox/1.0+ Steps: 1) Load http://www.ati.com/gitg/promotions/crytek/index.html 2) Wait for video clip to start playing. 3) Adjust volume - video replaced with static white nothingness. Sound continues.

I think this has something to do with AdBlock: I can see this bug with it enabled, but not with it disabled. This is with FF1.0.4, but I hope it's relevant anyway.

Always reproducible using José's steps with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050622 Firefox/1.0+, WMP 10, Adblock Plus 0.5.7. Clicking on the location bar while the video is playing causes the video to go all white, while the sound continues. Switching to another tab and then switching back brings back the video.

Steps: 1) Load http://www.ati.com/gitg/promotions/crytek/index.html 2) Wait for video clip to start playing. 3) Adjust volume - video replaced with static white nothingness. Sound continues. Or, Click on location bar, movie is gone. Reproduceable with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050613 Firefox/1.0.4 and with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050618 Firefox/1.0+ - both with no extensions installed. If you mouse right-click close to the video area and get a context menu and dismiss it the picture will reappear in the area occupied by the context menu. Also, opening Help->About if you dismiss the about window the part of the video that is under the About window will reappear. WFM on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050623 Firefox/1.0+ - no extensions. All checked with WMP10.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 Windows Media Player 10.00.00.3646 This is reproducable on my machine, with or without extensions installed. I only have to click the address bar to make the video turn to white. I originally assumed it was an overlay bug with my video card drivers, but since Windows Media Player is seemingly ignoring my attempt to turn off overlays, I was unable to test this. I then tried running standalone Media Player to play another movie, forcing the web browser plugin to display without an overlay, which causes the flash-to-white to be more temporary. It is more of a flicker, and the next frame correctly redraws. The same thing happens when running Firefox over Remote Desktop, which does not support video overlays. I suspect something in the rendering engine is repainting over the overlay window, causing the video to be clipped. I'm not entirely sure how overlays are implemented, but isn't it sometimes a magic-color? If so, the magic-color is probably being painted over, which isn't a problem in non-overlay mode. I wish I knew enough about Mozilla/Gecko's architecture to help you out more.

I can confirm. I have had this problem for a long time. In fact, I just tested
it with the following versions (all using a clean profile w/ no extensions) and
the following versions exhibited the problem:
- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511
Firefox/1.0.4
- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107
Firefox/1.0
- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040614 Firefox/0.9
However, I did NOT have the problem with this version:
- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040210 Firefox/0.8
I have Windows Media Player version 9.00.00.3250.
The video reappears if I change tabs and come back, or if I scroll the window.
It happens with most sites (including the one below), but not all of them. I
have yet to figure out why only some but not all sites. (Perhaps a different
plugin is used for other movies, but I'm not sure.)

I have just tried it with the newest trunk: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050623 Firefox/1.0+ This version has problems only some of the time. If you click in the address bar, try to adjust the volume in the plugin, or go to the Help->About page of the plugin and click OK, usually at least one of them cause the video to disappear. If you cannot reproduce the problem, try doing all three, then scrolling the page, and repeating in a different order until the problem appears.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 Windows Media Player 10.0.0.3646 Agreed that it seems directly related to overlays. I can prevent the bug occurring by right-clicking on the video window, selecting "Options", and then "Advanced..." under Video Acceleration, and unchecking "Use Overlays". Re-enabling that option brings the bug back.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 WMP 9.00.00.3250 Disabling overlays does not fix the issue for me. However, disabling all the options under "Legacy Video Renderer" stops the problem from occurring. Clicking on the address bar just makes the video blink white for a very short period of time, then the video shows again, with minimal interruptions.

I've had this problem for a while too, but I haven't had it with that site in particular. I have had this problem with almost 100% consistency on this site: http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_daily_show/videos/headlines/index.jhtml Here's my feedback on the ATI one: I did not have any problems with the overlay disappearing on my laptop at home. Meaning, I was clicking around, playing with it while the video was playing, zero problems. WMP 10, ATI Catalyst video drivers 5.6. On this lab computer that I'm on right now, I did notice the problem that you mentioned. Basically do anything that messes with the UI of firefox or the plugin, and the overlay disappears. This was on WMP 10, intel extreme drivers 6.14.10.3762. On the Comedy Central site, I have always had problems with that one. What's more, on the ATI one rightclicking on the overlay and selecting Zoom>Fullscreen seemed to always make it work again when you exited fullscreen mode. On the comedy central site you cannot right click on the overlay, so there's no way to get it to come back. The comedy central videos might be helpful as another testcase. I can easily reproduce this bug at http://www.ati.com/gitg/promotions/crytek/index.html with Firefox 1.0.4 final, on Windows XP SP2 with WMP 10 (unconfigured). My extensions (AdBlock, Mouse Gestures, and Image Zoom) don't appear to have affected this bug in any way. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4

This isn't just a problem with wmp. Happens with Real Player as well. For exemple open: http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/webbradio/frameset.asp?audioID=126688&audioType=db&audioFilePath=&intUnitID=&strChannel=&intplugin=2 and adjust the volume...

this occurs for me at http://news.bbc.co.uk - the video screen in the audio/video console will OCCASIONALLY go WHITE when the plugins volume control is adjusted. Minimising then maximising brings the video back. Firefox 1.0.4 WMP 10 ...switched over to wmp plugin because of problems with realplayer plugin i.e controls disappearing - maybe its a real/microsoft conspiracy ;)

This seems to be somewhat related to the interaction between the video driver and the plugin... not really something we're going to be able to fix in the near term.

Everything always works fine if I watch the WMV videos on www.schauspielervideos.de But: if I watch videos on www.darsteller-direkt.de ...using the very same setup on the same computer, I experience the same problem of a disappearing video, although relevant parts in the page source looks equal to me.

Given my previous comment, I don't think we block on Fx2 for this, though we would consider a well-baked patch that comes out of the trunk.

Closing old bugs in the Plugins component. We aren't going to track issues in 3rd-party plugins in the Mozilla bug tracker. In addition, support for NPAPI plugins will be removed at the end of this year; for more details see the post at https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/ If there is a serious bug in Firefox, it needs to be filed in the "Core" product, "Plug-Ins" component.
