Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1

Under Win2K, if I click on a URL or a hotlink in a msg., it freezes the
computer. Windows Task Manager is disabled (except for shutdown), and I have to
completely reboot the computer.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on URL or hotlink in a msg. received in Thunderbird 0.9
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Computer freezes. Neither the controls in the upper right hand corner of the
screen nor those in the bar at the bottom of the screen will work. Going to
Windows Task Manager (with CTRL-ALT-DEL) gives a blue screen, and the only
action that Task Manager will accept is Shutdown.

Expected Results:
Opened Mozilla Firefox 1.0, or, if it was already open, gone to it with new URL
or hotlink showing.

Mozilla 1.7.3 as both browser and mail client worked fine.
Is Firefox set as your default browser?

What happens when you copy the URL and paste it into:
  Start | Run

Yes.

1. If Firefox 1.0 is open, the computer tries to open another instance and then
hangs before it does so (the second instance appears in the system tray).
2. If Firefox 1.0 is not open, the computer just hangs.

In both cases entering Task Manager gives a blue screen, and only Shutdown will
work.

OK, that doesn't sound like a Thunderbird bug.

Check to see what program you have configured to handle the http protocol at the
Windows level. In Windows Explorer: Tools | Folder Options | File Types
Scan down the list of types until you find
  N/A URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
Select that item, click Advanced
In the dialog, there should be an 'open' command in the Actions list.
Select 'open' then click Edit.
 - What are the contents of the "Application used..." edit field?
 - is the DDE box checked?
 - if so, what are the contents of the four DDE boxes?

Then why did it start when I switched from Mozilla 1.7.3 to Firefox
1.0/Thunderbird 0.9?

> - What are the contents of the "Application used..." edit field?
C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE -url"%1"

>- is the DDE box checked?
Yes.

"%1",,0,0,,,,

I'm saying it's a Firefox bug, or a configuration bug. If it were only a TB
bug, you wouldn't get the crash when you enter the URL into Start|Run.

Is this correct?-----------------------^
There is no space between the -url part and the "%1" part? If so, please
add a space there and see if that fixes your problem.

Thanks for straightening me out. Should I repost to Firefox as product?

There is a space there, so I doubt that it will fix the problem. (I'm sending
this from my office computer, so I can't check until tonight or tomorrow.)

Thanks also for directing me to the Folder Tool in WinExplorer. I also had
trouble with opening JPEG images. It turned out they were set to open with IE.
When I changed it to Firefox, they opened perfectly. So perhaps there is some
sort of configuration problem. Are there other file types I should check?
Moving to Firefox.
Product: Thunderbird → Firefox
Now using Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird 1.0. If I close Firefox before I click on
a URL in an email message, Firefox opens without difficulty. So, from my point
of view, the bug is fixed.
