Sometimes it's useful to have a default identity set for outgoing e-mail. For
example, if I receive a message from a mailing list, the "to" address in the
e-mail might be the address of the mailing-list and not my own address, so
Thunderbird doesn't pick the right identity and I have to choose it manually. 

Setting my identity as the list's address and setting the "reply to" field of
the identity is not a very good solution...

It would be nice to have an option to choose a default identity for entries in
the address book, so that this situation could be easily (and nicely) worked around.

I suggest dupping this against 36482. That was filed for the same reason, would allow mechanism described here, and is more generic.

You can get much of the functionality described in the bug with the Folder Account extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2874)

I don't see the advice in #6 as a solution. The addon only allows to set a "From:" address based on the folder, not on the contact in the address book. I have aliases for different identities to my main email account. 

I'd definitely like to see this long requested feature finally coming true. Should work like this:

1. Each contact has a dropdown "Set this sender address by default [defaults to "standard"]"
2. Whenever i compose a mail and enter some recipients in the To: field, the sender address get's changed, if selected for that contact
3. The Sender address can manually be changed after it has been autoselected.
