Details
(Whiteboard: [asaP2])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 StumbleUpon/1.998
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 StumbleUpon/1.998
There is a green circle with an upwards-pointing arrow at the right edge of my
menu bar. When I click it, I get a dialog box informing me that both of the
extensions I have installed have updates available. Whether I keep both
selected, or only one of them, makes no difference: When I click "Install now",
the next dialog box that appears is titled "Firefox Update", contains as text
only the message "Now downloading and installing updates...", and three buttons
("Back", "Next", and "Cancel"), all of which are greyed out, so I can't even cancel.
This "Update" never finishes. I don't know what it is doing; it is not telling
me. Whatever it is doing, it is not making any visible progress.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Firefox 0.9.
2. Install the relevant old versions of TabBrowser Extension and StumbleUpon.
3. Upgrade to Firefox 1.0.
4. Don't upgrade the extensions during installation.
5. When Firefox 1.0 is up and running, wait for it to realise that updates are
available.
6. Try to install them.
Actual Results:
Endless wait.
Expected Results:
Update completes.

How long did you wait? I know that it oftens take a long time, but I've never had it go on forever.
I waited about three hours, I think. But irrespective of that, it should display at least a progress bar, if not some information on what it's actually doing (it is waiting for a response from a server? Is it actually downloading from a server? Is it copy files? etc.)

I waited for about an hour and finally cancelled it out.
I also am having this problem. In fact, I tried again last night, forgot about it, and this evening saw I was still trying to install them. What gives?

Ditto trying to upgrade from .9 to 1.0 on Win98 platform. Tried deleting .9 installation and installing 1.0 w/ no luck.
I confirm this on Windows XP Professional version 5.1.2600 with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1
I have the same problem. I had the indicator that the update is available when I was about to install version 1.0.1 and now the same with version 1.0.2 security update. I can monitor the connection traffic and there was NOTHING going either in or out. I had to do it "manually" - go the the website, find the software download section and download it. Also, once I installed the ver 1.0.2 I still have the update indicator (arrow up on the red field) that the update is available. Environment - Windows 2000 Professional

I've got the same problem on a Windows 2000 Pro system, except that my green
circle at the upper right corner is red. It says that critical updates are
available, and when I click it, it seems to download something, then gives me
the option to install. When I click "Install Now" I get the dialog box with a
spinning wheel and the message "Now downloading and installing updates...", and
the same three buttons
("Back", "Next", and "Cancel"), also all greyed out. I had this problem for the
update from 1.0 to 1.0.1 and from that to 1.0.2. In both cases I let it run for
2-3 hours before closing the dialog box. Then I went to the Mozilla website,
where I was able to download and install the latest version in a matter of minutes.

Also, I'm doing this at work (shh!), and am behind a firewall,
so I wonder if that might be a (the?) reason?

(In reply to comment #9) I have the same problem. XP Professional. It will give me the 'searching for updates' dialogue box, then goes to the 'downloading and installing updates' box. There isn't even a progress bar. I have to download everything, from critical secutrity updates to extensions and themes, by manually downloadint the whole thing from the site and then reinstalling it. And, even after it has been reinstalled, this problem keeps happening.

This is a duplicate of Bug #288054. At present, the firefox update is unable to work when the "Allow web sites to install software" is disabled. That option is found via Tools | Options, then looking in the "Web Features" section.
