User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041103 Firefox/1.0RC2
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041103 Firefox/1.0RC2

The ECW Plug-in xpi will not install.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to http://www.resmap.com/ecwplugins/download.htm
2. Choose either the automatic install or the manual install for the ECW Plug-in
3. Install the plug-in.
Actual Results:
For the automatic install:
1. It reports the following error:
ECWPlugin.xpi FAILED to install correctly (status=-210).

For the manual install:
1. It reports:
XPInstall must be enabled to install.

Note: I don't know if this is a bug in Mozilla or if it is just something that
needs to be changed in the browser settings or fixed in the XPI. I contacted
someone from the site listed above (the site which needs this plugin); he
indicated that he had already checked it in Firefox but couldn't figure out why
it doesn't work.

P.S. I thought that this might be a duplicate of Bug 238684, however I checked
on http://www.resmap.com/ecwplugins/DownloadNetscape6Plugin.htm and then typed
the following coded into the Address bar:
javascript:InstallTrigger.install(xpi,xpinstallCallback);
After typing that in, the extensions window showed up and the plugin proceeded
to download, and then it reported the same error as the manual install.
Attempting to install while the page is loading is disabled due to abuse,
install should happen in response to a user click event. That's bug 238684 and
what is apparently preventing your automatic install. If the launching code were
directly triggered by the "Automatic" link itself instead of running in the next
page it would work.

The manual link tries to download an exe for me, doesn't appear to have anything
to do with a .xpi.

I edited the page so as to make it load the plug-in when you click on a link.
The plug-in still fails to install. However, it does report a different error.

What happens:
1) I click on the link to install.
2) The extensions window shows up with the new extension in it.
3) I get the following message: "XPInstall must be enabled to install."
4) The extensions window closes (and it appears the extension disappears from
the extensions list).
Sorry for not explaining things more clearly earlier.

Here's a better step-by-step to reproduce the issue using the manual install.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to http://www.resmap.com/ecwplugins/download.htm
2. Select manual install for Netscape
3. Dowload the exe and run it.
4. Follow the steps to install.
5. Mozilla will launch, and the program will attempt to install inside of
Mozilla. You get a "Software Installation" window.
6. Click "Install"
7. The message "XPInstall must be enabled to install." appears, and in the
background, the other window says "Success"

Results:
The plugin is not intalled.

Note: in addition to the problem mentioned in Comment #2 and the problem
mentioned in Comment #3, the problem can also be seen in the following manner:

1. Do one or both of the following:
   a. Download and save the following file to your hard drive:
      http://www.resmap.com/ecwplugins/ECWPlugin.xpi
   b. If you chose the manual install option as described in Comment #3 and then
ran the install program, then you will find an xpi file at the following
location on your hard drive:
      C:\Program Files\Earth Resource Mapping\ECW Mozilla Plugin 2.0\ECWPlugin.xpi
2. Chose one (or both) of the xpi files mentioned above and drag and drop them
on the browser.
3. The install dialog will appear -- choose "Install"

Result:
"XPInstall must be enabled to install."

P.S. I re-enabled this bug (changed it to unconfirmed). I hope you don't mind
Daniel. There's a few more things that I want to check, and this may very well
be a bug in the xpi and not Firefox (I personally think that it is probably a
problem with the plugin or xpi, but I don't know what... so I need help from
some people who do know).
Hmm, just noticed that the attachment (Attachment 165776 [details]) will not work. Sorry
about that.
To test it you can do the following:
1. Save Attachment 165776 [details] to your hard drive
2. Download the following xpi file:
http://www.resmap.com/ecwplugins/ECWPlugin.xpi 3. Save it to the same directory
as the html file mentioned in step 1.
4. Open the html attachment from your hard drive.
5. Follow the rest of the steps in Comment #2 (basically just click the install
link and install the xpi).

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
