mozilla mail/news is blocked for a long time, if there's an extremely long
thread in a newsgroup

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. subscribe to the newsgroup de.sci.mathematik
2. wait half a minute (with Athlon XP 2800 512MB RAM)
3. read the thread "Hat Cantor doch geirrt" as an example for an extremely long
thread.

Actual Results:
mozilla mail/news ist blocked for a long time.

Expected Results:
1.) at least the browser and other components should continue to work
2.) the sort algorithm should be faster - consumed time seems to grow
exponentially with the length of the thread. The total number of messages in the
newsgroup is not a problem. I've downloaded 16000 headers from this newsgroup
and 15000 from another newsgroup ( de.comp.os.unix.linux.misc) which is ok in
performance. The problem with de.sci.mathematik seems to be the length of the
long thread.
I don't know which algorithm is currently beign used, but maybe there's a bette one.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we

this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a

(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
