So no page is needed to produce this error? You open Firefox with a blank page and close it?
Error messsage: The instruction at ... referenced memory at ... The memory could not be "written".
More comments to the above attachment: I've got the same problem here on a Win2000 machine (with Firefox 1.0). But I think the message does not always occur.
basically the same problem as noted. Using Win2000 SP4. Happend randomly when closing browser using the X or File Exit. Not page dependent as it may or may not happen. Happens also happens when closing the firefox/google start page. The Instruction at "0x4b5c8e2c" referenced memory at "0x23aea0a1". The memory could not be "read".

Does it help creating a new profile?
I have a similar problem. I do not get the "cannot read instruction" error, but I do get both a mozilla error reporting window and a windows error reporting window EVERY TIME I close firefox 1.0.4. I cannot identify what started but this started withing the past few weeks. I have web developer, Sage, Session Saver, tabbrowser preferences, duplicate tab, reload every, and alpha ticker extensions loaded. Everything is up to date. Every time this happens, the dump is sent via the firefox error reporting system, but I haven't seen anybody addressing the issue.

My system also STILL gives this error message when exiting. Does Firefox have any comment?

This looks like a close-on-quit error that I can't reproduce using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Windows XP. If you're able to reproduce this using Firefox 2.0.0.3 and with a new profile, please file a new bug detailing how. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager
