User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041113 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041113 If I opt for "tabbed browsing", my intention is to never have more than one browser window open (that's the way it works in Konqueror): There should at least be an option to open *all* new windows as new tab's instead, no matter if they are opened by clicking (or hitting return) on an "open in new window" link, opened as popups or by javascript, opened externally, opened from mail, bookmarks or history, or opened implicitly (about, help). I don't want to clutter my desktop and my taskbar with a dozen mozilla windows and icons, that's the whole reason behind tabbed browsing, isn't it? This is especially important for popup's, I want to have them grouped in the same window together with their parent, not in separate windows. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

Note: Firefox 1.0PR already had this, although it was temporarily disabled again in Firefox 1.0 because of a number of problenms. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 103843 ***

Re-opening per Klaus's comment in bug 103843 comment 134 Bug 103843 applies only to window.open whereas this bug applies to anything that can create a new window, therefore this is not a duplicate of bug 103843 (although it may possibly be a duplicate of some /other/ bug in the system)

Confirming and marking this bug's dependency on bug 103843, which is a subset of this one.

I don't think this is a dupe any more. The original (?) RFE was bug 185743 but that has been duped to a bug that refers to JS links only, others have been duped to the backend bug 172962. This bug is not only about JS and target="_blank" links and links from external apps (which is all possible now), but also wants about, help, history and bookmarks etc. within the same window. A bit more "extreme" than what the other bugs were about.

I don't see why the bug is in Core. It's possible to open chrome windows in tabs already. It's not done in Firefox/Seamonkey by design I believe. So I think this should be in either Suite or Firefox product, where it can be accepted/wontfixed. That is, unless reporter wants literally ALL windows (inlcuding alert()s etc.) to open in tabs. I searched hard and couldn't find any duplicates. Removing "dupeme". Updating summary.

heh. Right after I removed dupeme, I found this: bug 60775, cleverly named "MDI". This may or may not be a dupe of that.

I do not necessarily want the history or the bookmarks to be tabs instead of windows. If that's too difficult, these might remain as separate windows. However, I want any new web pages opened by clicking a history entry or a bookmark entry to be opened as a new tab in the existing window, not as a new browser window. Of course, dialog boxes are also ok as separate windows. However, at any time there should be only one "browser" window (with as many tabs as needed) displaying html, gif's or other visited content. As far as I can tell, this is already true for the current version of mozilla (it wasn't when I opened this report): Clicked links are opened as tabs (even when clicked in history, bookmarks, or mail messages), javascript popups are opened as tabs, external open commands can also be modified to open a tab instead of a window, and "about" is opened in a tab, too.

I don't know if this belongs to this bug or another one, but the following URL still pops up a separate window even when tabbed browsing is used: http://www.funny.co.uk/stuff/art_71-1789-If-Airlines-were-Computers.html Moreover, this beast consumes 100% CPU until closed.
