User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0

When a malformed file: url is typed into the location bar, firefox locks up. For
some reason when I substituted 'a' for the drive letter the problem did not
occur. At least one of the times I experienced the lockup, CcApp - Symantec's
"Common Client" - stopped responding shortly after Firefox stopped responding,
so it could be a problem with Norton Antivirus 2004.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. In location bar, type in file://c:// or file:c://
2. Hit the enter key on keyboard
3.

Actual Results:
Firefox locks up. Ctrl+Alt+Delete Displays "(not responding)" message for
firefox. At least one time, Symantec Norton's CcApp locked up simultaneously.
CcApp does not lock up every time.

Expected Results:
Should have generated a "file not found" or "please look up how to write a
properly formed file: url" message.

I am running Symantec Norton Antivirus 2004 on this machine. The only reason I
mention this is that the symantec memory resident CcApp.exe locked up on at
least one of the occasions that firefox did (but not every time).
Both example URLs works for me with FF 1.0 on WinNT4. The URLs are replaced with
the correct file:///c:// and the root directory is shown. Please try it again
with diasabled NAV.

I tried it with NAV disabled with the same results. The problem occurs on my
Windows 98 SE installation, but not on my Windows XP installation. I am going to
install firefox on another win98 based computer to see if I can stir up the
problem on another system.

I've duplicated this problem on three Windows 98 SE workstations now. Two of
them were running Norton Antivirus and one of them had no antivirus program
installed, although Norton Antivirus 2003 had been installed previously on the
antivirus-free computer.
I created an html page with a hyperlink referencing the malformed file: URL and
noticed that the corrected url appears in the information bar at the bottom of
the window when I hover the mouse over the link. However, the program still
locks up whenever I actually click the link referencing the bad URL.
Well I have the same problem on a Firefox 1.0 Binary for linux.
If a write something like e.g.: slashdot.-com slash-dot.com
If i write www.x-pressive.com it founds and nothing happen but if we write
www.x-pressi-ve.com firefox gets unable to use ;(
