As a "General" preference it MUST apply to ALL accounts; otherwise it should be specified on a per-account basis. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:

Confirming bug with a variant, using latest stable (1.5.0.8 build 20061025) I have 4 accounts, the new mail sound still plays despite having it turned off in the preferences inside thunderbird. changes regarding the sound DO NOT APPLY.
