When i look at the message source, the supposed message body is present in there. This problem appeared first in the release version 0.8 of thunderbird. Thunderbird 0.7.2 did not have this problem Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: No special steps required. Will send a sample of the message source if requested.

this appears to be the fault of the virus scanner - the last part of a multi-part alternative message is supposed to be the best part to display, but the virus scanner is tacking on two parts at the end...

Yes that is true. The virus scanner is attaching two text messages to the end of the message. Incidentally both in outlook express and squirelmail which is the web frontend at my place, the message displays properly. Does this mean that they are both taking the first part of the multipart mime and displaying it? Is there a setting in thunderbird to display all parts or first part etc?

if you view | message body as | plain text, I think we might pick the first part...try that and let me know...

As noted in the dupe, bug 130119 requests a means to select which 'alternative' part is displayed. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 101719 ***

Thanks a lot for the pointers. :-)
