User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 The longer news group names (news groups that don't fit with in the side bar) are truncated or abbreviated no matter what the user preference is. mail.server.default.abbreviate option/preference only affects the scheme of abbrevation. For example if mail.server.default.abbreviate is not at all set - netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news is abbreviated as n.p.m....l-news if mail.server.default.abbreviate is to false set to false - netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news is abbreviated as nestsca...-news In order to demostrate the issue, I reduced the size my side bar little bit. However on the other news servers, the group hierarch and length are too long. Thus the side bar shows only junks and hence one has to select the group to see what the groups is. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Expected Results: If the length of the folder or newgroup name is too long and abbreviation is set to false. The GUI should list the names as is and provide a scroll bar to see the complete name.

A helpful "balloon" already appears (in TB13) whenever mail.server.default.abbreviate is set to its default value "true," but unfortunately the "balloon" is currently suppressed when that value is set to "false," even though in the "false" case, displayed newsgroup names are even more indistinguishable when the column is narrow (you would have to widen the column a lot to see lengthy complete names). Hence I suggest letting the "balloon" always appear, not solely when the names are "abbreviated."
