When I compact folders the status bar says compacting folder Inbox and fails to
update automatically.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Delete unwanted mail
2. Go to file menu
3. Select compact folders

Actual Results:  
The status bar says compacting folder Inbox and fails to update automatically.

Expected Results:  
Not have shown compacting folder Inbox or failing to update (usually it happens
so quickly I don't see that message in the status bar).

I'm using version .9 of Thunderbird.

Update to what?  Do you mean update to show "Done" or to clear after the 
operation is complete?  If so, please mark this bug as a dupe of bug 181627.
