found using 200411220x-0.9 on the three main platforms.

1. in the mail 3pane window, group sort your messages. eg, I did message
grouping based on date or sender, typically by hitting the 'g' keyboard shortcut.

2. click on any of the column headers over the thread pane to get out of message
grouping.

results: the caret (and therefore focus) ends up in the quicksearch field
(search toolbar). it doesn't seem to matter where focus was right before doing
step 2, either --it always ends up in quicksearch.

is this expected?

Maybe *you* can get Neil to check in the patch to bug 179050; he's resisted 
doing so despite several nudges from me.
Looking at this more, I wonder if this is the same problem as the bugs cited in 
comment 1.  This *is* related to bug 264941.

This symptom also happens if you use the menu   View | Sort By | Unthreaded.
Bug 267765 seems to be the same as this one.
No response from reporter, duping.
