Details

There are inevitably some areas of UMO that will overlap with BMO.  The first
major area would be user profiles.  (bugzilla schema at
http://www.ravenbrook.com/project/p4dti/tool/cgi/bugzilla-schema/ ).  This would
enable a user to have a common login across mozilla.org.  

This would lead to a common user-management tool.

Any other ideas?
The systems have a different purpose, and there's security concerns here. It
also would most likely kill or severely limit UMOs ability to manage users on
its own, create a dependency on the availability of BMO, etc. I don't feel that
there's a benefit that warrants the time involved.

Also, why is this bug filed in this component?
I believe the long-term plan for mozilla.org is to get an LDAP server set up for
this purpose.  Currently, we have https://despot.mozilla.org/ which does user
management mostly for CVS.  It's on my long-term task list to replace that with
an LDAP server and related management tools.  Bugzilla already has the
capability to authenticate against LDAP, but it would mean migrating all of the
users from the existing database, and we're likely to wind up with a fair bit of
overlap from people who aren't using the same email address for CVS that they
are in Bugzilla.
I picked UMO because UMO isn't as mature as bugzilla.  As with any project,
there are a lot of things to consider.  Security between servers, especially
those that are not co-located, will be an issue.  But this bug is for
brainstorming, not implementing.

Sounds interesting, and better than trying to interface directly with another
DB. but definitely a long-term item.
