Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/125.5.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/125.11 Build Identifier: Thunderbird 0.9 and Mozilla 1.7.3 When Thunderbird and Mozilla is set to the default browser, they do not set 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command' so that mailto links are properly handled by the default mail client. Both Eudora and Outlook set this registry setting as well as the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\clients\mail' setting. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Mozilla or Thunderbird 2. Set it as the default mail client 3. Check 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command' mail in the registry Actual Results: The registry setting does not change. This will cause many applications to use whatever was last set in that registry entry to be used as the mail client instead of Mozilla or Thunderbird. Expected Results: Mozilla and Thunderbird should set the 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command' to itself so that Mozilla will be used when mailto links are passed to the OS.
Summary: When Thunderbird and Mozilla is set to the default browser, they do not set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command → When Thunderbird and Mozilla are set to the default browser, they do not set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
My bad - this only happens on Mozilla 1.7.3 and not on the latest Thunderbird (0.9) - I thought I was using the latest, but I wasn't. It's still an issue for Mozilla, but not for Thunderbird.
Product: Thunderbird → Mozilla Application Suite
Summary: When Thunderbird and Mozilla are set to the default browser, they do not set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command → When Mozilla is set to the default browser, it does not set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
Default browser is not the same as default mail client. So have you set Mozilla as default mail client? see Edit - Preferences - MailNews: [x] Use Mozilla as the default mail appl.

Yup - try it for yourself. I set Mozilla Mail to be the default Mail client. It didn't touch 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command' to Mozilla. This was reported by one of our (Meeting Maker, Inc.) large customers in Netscape 7.2 and it still exists in Mozilla 1.7.3, but appears to have been fixed in Thunderbird 0.9.

I conform this bug. I am using Mozilla Suite 1.7.3 on Win2K SP4. I checked the option "Use Mozilla Mail as default mail application" and no matter how many times I do it, MS Outlook opens whenever I click on a mailto link. I also Selected Mozilla Mail as default mail application uner Control Panel->Internet Settings->Programs. Still no use. Also I cheked the registry values specified. First (HKCR) refers to Outlook and second (HKLM) doesn't contain any path to Mozilla mail.

Dan, 1.7.3 is actually pretty old (9 months or so). Is this a problem with a current trunk Mozilla build?
Yeah, the bug is still currently in the latest build of Mozilla (1.7.5).

Dan, the latest build is 1.8a5, and will soon be 1.8a6. Could you please test that? 1.7.5 is just 1.7.3 with security updates...
Ugh. Even though none of your users use the nightly builds or tester builds, I tried it on that one (1.8a5). And even though the bug is really easy to rep - I went to the trouble of installing 1.8a5, testing it, and then going back to install 1.7.5 (I don't use beta builds of mozilla if I can help it). The bug is still there. It's there in the official build (1.7.5), it's there in the latest tester build (1.8a5), and it's there in the latest nightly build (as of 2004-01-10-07).
