When I minimize the Thunderbird and leave it alone for a while, the tray icon
notices me of a new e-mail even when I don't have any. Try it yourself.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Minimize the Thunderbird (next to the maximize and close-buttons)
2. Leave it alone for a while.
Actual Results:
Thunderbird noticed me of a new e-mail, even there hasn't come one.
Expected Results:
Shouldn't notice.
Default theme, no extensions except Locale Switcher and Finnish translation.

Have you set any filters? What happens when a message is determined as junk?
Will it remain marked as unread?

No filters. This happens even though I have nothing in my junk-folder.

I get the same thing. Currently using version 1.0RC1 (20041201), but it's been
happening since at least 0.6.
It only happens for me on IMAP mailboxes, and only I if leave unread messages in
my inbox

It happens for me with no filters and only POP3. Running version 1.0 on Mac OS X.

Same problem for me. Not sure how long it's been going on. I'm running .9 and
the icon will go away if I enter Thunderbird and click to change the mailbox or
folder displayed, but is remarkably annoying if you're waiting for an email.

Same probleme for me. Using version 1.5
Description: When minimized, he icon appears in the system tray but no email in the folders (not even in the Junk folder).
Filters: couple of them to move my emails into sub-directories based on the account
Accounts: 3, all POP3, no remove from the server
Theme: No special theme
Extensions: "Display User Mail Agent Extension 1.2"
"Contacts Slidebar 0.6"
How to get rid of the icon: maximize Thunderbird and change the current directory. The icon disappears.

Same here on 1.5.0.8 (20061025) Windows XP. The "new mail" icon is in the systray even when no new mail is in a relevant folder. Switching folders makes it disappear, as does clicking "get mail."
I believe a related problem is that I often see the "new mail" notifier popup when there is no new mail, perhaps what is reported in bug #260245.
One account is IMAP (leave everything on server); other is a gmail pop account.

I haven't seen this in a long time (I'm using v3b2). I think the bug can be closed.

I'm having the same issue. I'm using V 12.0 beta on Windows 7 64 bit. I've only noticed this issue in the last few upgrades (can't remember exactly which one sorry!) so I think it had been introduced (re-introduced?) into the beta version from the main release.
I should also say I have a mix of imap and pop accounts, and the imap is a recent-ish addition so I can't be sure if that didn't cause the issue. I will remove the imap account temporarily and see if that fixes it...

UPDATE: the IMAP account is not the issue...

The same issue in release version 12.0. When I mark mail(s) as read, the icon disappears for a moment but after a few seconds appears again.

I haven't seen this happen for a long time, not with TB 17 + (also with EarlyBird & Daily) so I think it should be marked as resolved unless anyone else is still seeing it...?
I can't change the status, I suggest whoever can should change it to resolved
