User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Build Identifier: thunderbird 0.9 and version 1.0 20041206

When setting up an account at mail.cs.ualberta.ca thunderbird is able to
retrieve the folders tree but then a message in the lower bar appears saying
looking for folders, the cursor turns hourglass and stays there forever. It
works with other imap accounts but not with this. I detect the problem in
Windows as well as fedora core3.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.define a new account in mail.cs.ualberta.ca
2.select inbox
3.

Actual Results:
the cursor becomes hourglass
a message appears saying "looking for folders..." and stay there for ever

Expected Results:
get the folders and the messages

The program does not crash, if I press stop I am able to change to other
account and send/retrieve mails.

As the problem is related to a particular server it may be difficult to track
by yourself. So if you need any other particular information or you want me to
do some testing, please let me know
Can you create an Imap log and attach it to this bug (via the "create new

Summary: unable to get the folders from imap mail account → unable to get the folders from imap mail account
Version: unspecified → 1.7 Branch
I tried to generate the IMAP log files according the instructions but the only
thing I get is an empty file. I tried in Windows XP an Linux with the same result.
OS: Linux → All
I went into the mozilla directory and found
that the file $HOME/.mozilla/default/08i8go56.slt/panacea.dat keeps
updating and it has information about the mail but also the news. This
is part of the file:

...
<(BD72=#news.at.blackbox.bbe.antiracism)(BD73

=/home/mgarcia/.mozilla/default/08i8go56.slt/ImapMail/mail.cs.ualberta.ca/\
#news.sbd/at.sbd/blackbox.sbd/bbe.sbd/jobs.msf)(BD74
    =#news^at^blackbox^bbe^jobs)>
{1:^80 {(k^81:c)(s=9)}
  [-3EFB(^82^BD73)(^83=0)(^84=0)(^85=0)(^86=0)(^87=0)(^88=0)(^89=0)
    (^8A=)(^8B=0)(^8C=5e)(^8D^BD74)(^8E=0)]}
[-3EFA:^80(^82^BD6F)(^83^CA)(^84=0)(^85=0)(^86=0)(^87=0)(^88=0)(^89=0)
    (^8A=)(^8B=80)(^8C=2e)(^8D^BD72)(^8E=0)]

the size of the file was over 12 MB after 50 minutes. So I think its a news
client/server related problem.
The thing is I never request news but it just does it automatically... and takes
forever
found the problem

I'm not actually subscribed to the newsgroup server, however The Newsgroup
folders appear as folders inside the mail folders. Something like:

-mgarcia@mail.uaf.ca
   +-Inbox
   +-Drafts
   +-Templates
   +-#news
   +-postpone-msg
   +-sent-mail

So #news shouldn't be there. I look in my $HOME directory, in the computer with
IMAP server, and I found a file called ".newsrc". I delete it and it magically
solved the problem. I don't know what program created the file. It contains
information about the newsgrous. If it exists mozilla email client (or
thunderbird) automatically starts to download all the newsgroups files and it
could be more than 500 MByte.
