I also love Debian. Please please please drop the non-free copyright you have on the new firefox artwork so that us Debian users can use it too! I understand you wanting to protect it with trademarks and Debian doesn't have a problem with these, it's the non-free copyright that's causing the problem. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

Check these threads: http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-legal@lists.debian.org/msg00450.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/02/msg01877.html That might help you. This quote intrigues me: Trademark law isn't as broad as you might think -- it also isn't as broad as the Mozilla Foundation is claiming it is. (Bad them!) See related bug 269460 (RFE: free/open-source binaries of Firefox on FTP server) which is wider than just liberating/replacing the artwork (e.g.: installer, talkback program, contract in installer, any other proprietary software, the name). (In reply to comment #1) > Trademark law isn't as broad as you might think -- it also isn't as broad as > the Mozilla Foundation is claiming it is. (Bad them!) My understanding is that MF are not not licensing the *copyright* on the artwork either (or, at least, it is ambiguous).

Please make your pretty icons free! Who do I need to convince? This is a long-standing bug.

With Debian testing being frozen [http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/05/msg00001.html] and the real chance of a stable release of 'Sarge' within the next months, could the Mozilla Foundation find it in their hearts to drop the non-free copyright on the Firefox artwork, at least for Debian Stable? Where there's a will there's a way!

Official licensing program in place at http://www.mozilla.org/licensing/ and some concessions have been made for Debian. Please see Web site for further details and/or escalate to licensing@mozilla.org.

Unfortunately making concessions Debian does not make the trademarks completely free. The policy states "You can't put the Mozilla logo on anything that you produce commercially -- at least not without receiving Mozilla's permission." and this violates the anti-discrimination clause of the Debian Free Software Guidelines. See bullet point 8. http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines
