RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 244471

(Reporter: sgarner, Assigned: mscott)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Build Identifier: Thunderbird 1.0 (20041206)

When Thunderbird is set to compose messages in plain text, the compose message
window always uses the monospace/fixed width font (i.e. Courier New) set in
Options > Fonts, even if the "Use the following font" setting is set
to "Variable width font" in Options > Display.

Reading messages is not affected (plain text messages sent to you will
correctly appear in the specified variable width font).

As a workaround, it is possible to change the Monospace font in Options >
Fonts to a variable width font.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set the account to not "Compose in HTML format"
2. Set plain text messages to display in variable width font (Options >
Display)
3. Compose a message
Actual Results:
The message body will be composed in monospace/fixed width font (default:
Courier New, as set in Options > Fonts).

Expected Results:
The message body should have been composed in a variable width font (as set in
Options > Fonts).

Using encoding: Western (ISO-8859-1)
"Use the following font" is a DISPLAY option, not a COMPOSE option.

If you wish to compose with variable width, it's best to compose as HTML; you
can still send the mail out as plain text, altho I'll grant it's not trivial to
make this happen automatically (you need to have your recipient listed in your
address book as "prefers plain"). On a per-message basis, you can also force
plain-text transmission using the Options|Format menu.

This is not recommended; see bug 227186.

This is still a problem in Thunderbird 3. Are there any plans to allow plain text emails to be composed in variable width fonts? I don't want to send in HTML.
