After returning to my computer, which had been on for a few hours, I discovered
that it had crashed (not the first time) for no apparent reason - no programs
running, Firefox may have been open - I don't remember.  Upon restarting my
computer, I found that every single bookmark in Firefox was gone.  This is
distressing.  This problem didn't seem to match any of the others I found.  I
also have no idea how to reproduce it, if it's possible at all.

Expected Results:  
I was sort of expecting to see my bookmarks where they always are...

My computer has been freezing recently whenever I leave it for an hour or two -
the screen will go black, as it always does after 15 minutes, and when I come
back, I won't be able to get back to the regular screen.  Don't know if this is
related at all, but it's certainly not a *good* sign...

You should be able to recover your bookmarks from a backup that is made automaticly.
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile
Follow the directions in the section titled "Locate your profile folder". There
should be a file named "bookmarks.bak" in your profile folder.

1. Open the bookmark manager (bookmarks --> Manage Bookmarks)
2. in the bookmark manager choose (File --> Import)
3. Select "From File" and choose Next
4. Navigate to the folder where the bookmarks.bak is located and choose Open
