Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0

When I type, for example groups.yahoo.com/group/ke

the target url
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kefir_making
appear below location bar.
I highlight it and click

and sometimes the complete url is entered into the location bar as it should,
but sometimes it is incomplete, like for example, recently only

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ke/

was entered into the bar and the search failed.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1.type groups.yahoo.c etc in location bar
2.when target url appear, highlight it and click
3.see if browser is taken to the correct target page

Actual Results:
Sometimes address is incomplete/different and search failed.
eg groups.yahoo.com/group/ke...
became
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ke/

Expected Results:
the correct url
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kefir_making
should have been automatically entered/completed in the location bar

Never seen this bug. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5)
Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0

Are you sure it's not a mistake on your part?
I think this bug is the same that #168623 occuring in Mozilla Suite.

To reproduce : you must let the mouse cursor juste below the adress bar when
typing URL.

Same as #264387 also...
Is this about clicking without moving mouse? If so, it's indeed a duplicate.

But I think I reproduced this just by clicking on the top area of autocomplete
popup (after moving mouse).

I think you can reproduce this by moving your mouse and clicking the URL really
fast after typing.
This happens to me about 50% of the time, and it's extremely irritating. I mostly navigate using one hand on the keyboard to quickly select often-visited urls, so it happens a lot.

I have tried clicking different parts of the bar, clicking at different speeds, moving the mouse at different speeds, and I still can't reliably reproduce it. I'm pretty sure it's not mouse-movement related because it often happens repeatedly without mouse movement, ie:

- Select location bar and type 'p'
- 'www.penny-arcade.com' appears in list
- highlight list with mouse and click
- arrive at www.pflag.org
- move mouse up 4 pixels and select again, and press p again
- problem reasserts itself despite minimal mouse movement

I wondered in a related bug (311839) whether it might have to do with Cleartype font smoothing on windows? I seem to encounter the problem much more since switching to an LCD monitor.

Windows XP SP2 (two different computers, both LCD screens)
Firefox 1.5.0.1
Ok this just did it to me 40 times in a row. Is there some way I can provide proof (maybe a video?) to get this confirmed?

Trying to visit musicthing.blogspot.com, typing is 'mu' and clicking the completed url from the drop-down list, then trying different amounts like 'music' or 'mus' and trying to click in different areas, and at different times. Still fails to fill in location bar with correct url.

Dell Latitude X1, Windows XP SP2, Firefox 1.5.0.1, Aquatint theme 1.6.3
Another Clue.

Problem is almost entirely eliminated using graymodern theme 0.7 instead of Aquatint 1.6.3. Using Firefox theme 2.0, problem is sometimes present, but is much worse under aquatint.

Problem is caused by, or at least controlled by the themes.

swf file from camstudio showing bug

this starts to be anoing. so i provided swf movie that shows what is going on.
i think the problem is in the combo box - it doesn't select item but reacts on click, but i don't know firefox code so maybe I'm wrong
(In reply to comment #10)

Yeah - your movie shows it exactly the way it happens on my computer.

Still happens sometimes using Graymodern, but as I said, not as bad as on aquatint.

Can we get this confirmed please? There's video evidence now.

Mass edit: Setting correct QA for location bar/autocomplete. My bad. I forgot I had once been Autocomplete QA too. Hmm, why can't I just set the QA of bugs to the default QA of the component in a mass edit rather than having to do it manually...?

It seems to me to be a combination of clicking fast and at the top of the first entry, with the tip of the cursor above the letters.

I wonder if it's possible that the "item selected" event gets fired before the item actually gets highlighted, causing the browser to go to the address that you've typed so far, rather than the item you've selected.

It occurs with default 1.5.0.7 theme, several times per day for me.

I believe it's always the first entry in the list. With entries further down, something is always selected, so those don't pose a problem.

This is Bug 174489 all over again.

This bug has been around since 2002 and still isn't fixed. It keeps coming up, and either getting fixed and rebroken or else it is closed by someone who can't seem to reproduce it and claims it is bogus. Unbelievable.

Can we finally, really, truly get this fixed, please?
do you still see this with FF 3?

Seems fixed to me.
OK, if this does not happen any more, I will close as WORKSFORME.
