i am very suspicious that i am doing something wrong, but i could
not get any info on mozilla-builds/mozilla-mail-news mailing lists.
hence the bug.

my problem:

i am building thunderbird 1.0 on freebsd 4.9 and i have:

$ echo $MOZCONFIG
moz_config_thunderbird

$ cat $MOZCONFIG
. $topsrcdir/moz_config_all
. $topsrcdir/mail/config/mozconfig
mk_add_options MOZ_OBJDIR=@TOPSRCDIR@/obj-thunderbird

however, "gmake -f client.mk build_all" builds within the source
tree, and not within the obj-thunderbird directory.

what am i doing wrong?

p.s: (the above process worked fine for firefox)

the build page:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/build.html

recommends:

>> At this time we do not recommend using the same tree for Thunderbird
>> and other Mozilla applications. Thunderbird replaces various mail and
>> toolkit files in the chrome during the build process which would then
>> leave the resulting JAR files incompatible with the Mozilla suite.

perhaps this implies that i should not expect MOZ_OBJDIR
to work? its not very clear to me.
what are the contents of |moz_config_all| ?
sorry! contents of moz_config_all:

mk_add_options BUILD_OFFICIAL=1
