I'm using Thunderbird 1.0 with several IMAP-accounts. Some of the accounts have "Check for new messages every XX minutes" enabled and several has not. If I go into one of the accounts -without- this enabled in the Server Settings, the account keeps getting refreshed at regular intervals until I close Thunderbird and restart it.

does this server support the idle command? Have you tried turning off the use of the IDLE command in the advanced server settings for this imap account in tbird? With the IDLE command, the server tells us about new mail without us asking...if that fixes it, can you close this bug as WFM?

Next 2 bugs are report on IMAP and have "check message every minute" in summary.
These seems to be same symptom to this bug.
> Bug 213017 2004-11-22 NEW MailNews
> When "check for new messages" boxes are unchecked,
> mail server is still contacted every n minutes
> Bug 233418 2004-05-08 UNCO Preferen
> Option "Check for new messages every XXX minutes" unselected,
> but still tries to access server
David, are these also phenomena when "IDLE" is used?
Or they are "Junk Purge" related and different from this bug?

When I disable "Use IDLE command", the problem goes away yes. But; shouldn't Thunderbird weigh the users choice to disable the "check mail every XX minutes"-option above the "Use IDLE command"-setting under "Advanced"? Meaning; if a user de-selects the "Check mail every XX minutes"-option, Thunderbird automatically de-selects the "Use Idle command"-setting at the same time?

I'd also like to note that I need to exit and restart Thunderbird before the "Use IDLE command"-setting is actually disabled.

you could argue that, but we decided not to do it that way - we let you control both settings independently...

(In reply to comment #6) > you could argue that, but we decided not to do it that way - we let you control > both settings independently... Control is all good and well, but I still think that if a user has un-checked "Check for new messages every XX minutes" it is a pretty clear indication that the user does not want to recieve new messages at a regular interval. I agree with you that an option to enable the IDLE command despite having un-checked the "Check every.."-option, but not as a default. At least not if userfriendlyness / less user-frustration is a goal. :)
