I am running Thunderbird on Linux (Gentoo kernel 2.6.9-gentoo-r9n) and the
following version of thunderbird version 1.0 (20041212) now if I try to create a
message from one in my in box the create window comes up and appears to work but
filter disappears

I'm having this error too. Thunderbird 1.0 on WinXP:

I click on the recipient or in the sender and then "Create Filter from Message",
all in my local folder's inbox. The filter is created: I know this because I run
"Run filters on folder" afterwards. But after I quit and restart Thunderbird
(with no errors, just a plain restart), the filter is not there anymore.

I'm really sorry to say that this does not happen always (not easily
reproducible). Now, for example, it worked.
