"Getting Started with Mozilla 1.7.5" at the cited URL says: "Before installing a new version of Mozilla, you should uninstall your previous version first." This is obsolete. Newer versions of Mozilla correctly install over older versions with any necessary deletion from the latter occuring automatically. This is also a problem with "Installation Instructions for Mozilla 1.7.5" at <http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.7.5/installation.html>, which says: "Note: It is recommended that you uninstall previous versions of Mozilla before installing Mozilla 1.7.5." The problem might exist elsewhere in the Mozilla.org Web site. The instruction to delete old versions has been improperly carried forward from a time when it was indeed necessary. It has NOT been necessary for several versions prior to 1.7.5.

also in release notes: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.7.5/installation.html One problem with installing over an old version is with extension incompatibility. I don't know if this is fixed, but I'll try to confirm this w/ trial-and-error when I have time. CC'ing relnote maintainer

If you can point to Seamonkey fixes that solved problems such as disabling 3rd party components installed to the application directory, then we'll consider this. Otherwise this is wontfix.

As far as I know, Bug 210731 [Setup should delete target installation dir on upgrade] is the fix.

Besides fixed bug 210731 cited by Ilias in comment #3, I think fixed bug 198081 also satisfies the request in comment #2. Additionally, the readme.txt file with Mozilla 1.7.5, says: "For all platforms, install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on top of previously released builds may cause problems." This, too, needs revision.

Whether or not this is obsolete on other platforms, this definitely *is*
obsolete on Max OS X. The installation method on Mac OS X ("drag the icon to
your Applications folder") will completely overwrite/remove the existing version
if you have one there to be replaced and you choose "replace" from the "existing
file with that name at the destination" dialog.

Any old Mozilla Suite content on the site should be archived. Closing as wontfix.
