275315 - Browser is causing computer to freeze

The past few days when I am using firefox it has been freezing my system to the
point where I can't do anything causing me to reboot. It mainly happens when I
stop using my computer for 5 mins or more. What is causing this and how can I
resolve this issue. Any help is appreciated. 

What sites are open in FF when this happens? and  What sites are open in FF when
this happens?
I have 4 tabs open at once and they are espn, sportsline, SI, foxsports. 

Have you run a hard drive check lately (I had a hard drive fail once and
mysterious hangs was one of the symptoms)? 
My system has been doing it's own scan disk every time it freezes up cause I
have to unplug my computer from the wall. 

What are your system specs? (OS, hardware, etc.) 
I have an compaq presario 7360 which runs win98 SE. free space C: 4.2 GB D: 200
MB. FF installed on C: ram = 312 MB.

What other applications do you run at the same time? 
I normally don't have anything else running.

I do not have the above issue happen when using IE.

This issue is also happening when i view a web page as well.
