User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10.1 OK, obvoisly there is an option to change the aplication for accessing different files through firefox such as the app for accessing PDF documents. I accessed this option through Tools(menue)/Options/Downloads(tab icon)/File Types (at the bottom)/PDF (at the top of the list)/Change Action (button). I personally want my PDF's to open with GSView.exe. I have tried setting the preference to "save to disk", I have tried restarting the browser, the operating system (WinXP) and then double checking firefox. Nothing ever changes, the damn thing keep on opening with Adobe Acrobat 6 and it take about one minute or more to close that program through Firefox (there is obviously some kind of conflict between these two programs). No matter what the case, I would much rather open my PDF's with GSView or any program of my choosing through Firefox even if the conflict between acrobat and firefox was corrected. Could you please fix these option change problem to work truthfully and effectively. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Brows to the Change Action button with PDF selected 2. Change the program for loading pdf's to something other than Acrobat 3. Test by trying to open a PDF from the web Actual Results: Acrobat opens PDF's no matter what program was selected to open them. Expected Results: The program I chose should have opened up the PDF rather than Acrobat. Please e-mail me about the progress on fixing this and let me know when I could get an update for this fix.
Try Tools --> options --> downloads --> Plug-Ins Button --> uncheck all documents with adobe
I struggled with the same and finally found the solution, disable the pdf plugin as Kevin explained above and also remove the pdf line from Preferences->Downloads->File Types then firefox will ask what to do when you load pdf. If the plugin is not disabled, it will be started regardless what the file association is (This is confusing really, the file association dialog and plugins should be 'fixed' so that the managing of them is more user-friendly and straight-forward) ps. I guess Linux has Edit->Preferences and windows has Tools->Options, otherwise the same
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041110 Firefox/1.0 Whilst trying to help a colleague that reported a similar problem I found the following behaviour here: PDFs were set to "Save To Disk" but opened in the browser. Simply renaming the plugin (nppdf32.dll) is indeed a workaround but note that if nppdf32.dll is present in a NC 4.* installation on the same system that will also need to be renamed. The same plugin in an IE plugin directory doesn't get picked up the same way that the NC 4.* copy does. All other File Types work as expected when set to the approriate action.
I can't tell a couple of things from this thread: 1) Is this behavior isolated to to the Adobe Reader plugin? Or does it also happen with other plugins? 2) Given comment #1 and comment #2, is this still an open bug?
