When creating a filter to match on "To or CC" fields, I consistently get an error message that reads: "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: UID invalid arguments." This is also seems to happen when I use more than one filter criteria. I've attached screenshots of the dialogs. The mailserver is running SmarterMail from smartertools.com.

you're running filters after the fact, right? My guess is that it's a problem specifically with to or cc filters, and if you set up the filter with to and cc fields separate, it might work. in any case, an imap protocol log would be helpful: http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#imap

These are the settings I used to cause the UID error message.

I am running the filter after my mail has downloaded. And it doesn't seem to be related to To or CC filters. I also occurs if I use more than one filter criteria. I would definitely like to see what's going on in the IMAP log, but the directions you pointed me to don't work. Specifically: "Save this file and drag and drop this file on the Netscape/Mozilla application icon. Additional information for Mac OS X:" You can't drag and drop a file on to the Thunderbird icon. I went ahead and followed the UNIX instructions, but no log file was generated. Do you have a more complete set of instructions for how I can enable logging? Thanks! it's always tricky on the mac... did you setenv NSPR_LOG_MODULES=IMAP:5 setenv NSPR_LOG_FILE=/tmp/imapio.txt ? Did imapio.txt get created at all?

I recently encountered this problem, except on Linux instead of Mac OS X, using Thunderbird 1.0. We recently transitioned to an Exchange mail server, which I'm accessing via IMAP, so that may be relevant. For me, the symptom appears to be specific to "To or Cc" filters for "OR" rules. If I put To and Cc rules on separate lines, it works fine. It seems to happen especially if I have multiple "To or Cc" filters in the same rule, using "Match any of the following". Anyway, making a To and a Cc rule for each To or Cc rule seems to be the workaround.
