When you receive a signed message with Thunderbird, there's no indication that the message is trustworthy unless you open up the full header view. Even in Mozilla, the indicator is buried in a tiny icon on the status bar that you don't notice unless you go looking for it. Both the Encryption and the Signed icons should show up right next to the From name when appropriate.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved. Thank you for your help in this matter. Well, I think it's still an issue, but apparently no one actually cares about secure communications, so it never gets used. Oh well...

Summary: hidden digital signature indicator → Show digital signature icon in Brief headers
Version: unspecified → Trunk
Yes, it is an issue with SeaMonkey 1.1 also. Previously (1.0.7) a "pen" icon would appear on the left side of the status bar when an e-mail with a digital signature was received. Now on 1.1 this icon only appears when the header pane is expanded. There may not be many of us using signed e-mail or other forms of security/encryption, but let's get the icon back. Perhaps someone can add this bug to SeaMonkey 1.1 bugs?

The current version of Thunderbird displays a "has attachment" icon for multipart/signed messages. That is of little help, because of the common meaning of the term "attachment": something that can be filed on its own. People don't usually bother signing their messages. However, some people sign _every_ message they send. It would be nice to have a different icon for security attachments and reserve the staple for regular attachment. A third icon, a merge of the other two, should mark messages that have both. Ditto for the "view" drop down list.

I don't remember this icon being buried, but then it's a while since I checked. (Day-to-day I use Pine, which now has S/MIME support built in, so I'm testing it) Digital signatures from a trusted CA are a good way to push mail past spam filters, and we should encourage their use.

(In reply to comment #6) > Is there still even a "brief" header view in TB3? No - you need to install an add-on to get this.

After 5 years - resolved? Won't fix? It should be reopened. Granted the amount of encoded or signed e-mail is very small and this would only be of interest to a small user group it still seems like the proper place for the icon would be in the window where the message info is displayed. An option to display it, i.e similar to the 'attachment', 'thread', 'size', 'from', 'to', etc. instead of not displaying the pen until the message is opened and then down at the bottom right.

That's not the bried headers, hence the wontfix. If you want a column to display tis it's another bug.
