Despite claims (see bug 270304, considered fixed) that the problem will be
solved with new website, rendering is still incorrect in Firefox 1.0 on Windows
XP at 800x600.

This should not be considered as a Website issue, but as a rendering problem:
the browser should figure out how to cope with items that are too large to fit
side by side (and the website hint at what can be done for a best fit ?).

In the current display, look at Java at Plugins: the X information is pushed to
a new line because text for Windows and Linux is too large. The browser should
instead fold the text lines of all icons to fit into equal fixed-length spaces
and leave the icons where they belong. IE does a lightly better, although not
really a good, job. One more way for Firefox to beat IE.

If this is a Mozilla layout issue then I'm sure it's a dupe. Otherwise, this is
just a good reason to reopen bug 270304.
Summary: Mozilla update untidy rendring at 800x600 → Mozilla update untidy rendering at 800x600
The issue is not limited to Update.Moz site

when selecting Thunderbird Forums at http://www.spreadfirefox.com/, the second
table overflows into the right frame when the display is set to 800x600. At
1024x768 the display is perfect.
The spreadfirefox thing is invalid (see existing bugs on it for detailed
explanations as to why it's invalid) as a layout bug. So's the update.moz.org
issue.

So over to website; we're rendering this exactly as these sites explicitly
request we do.

We can complain about Mozilla or SpreadFirefox producing badly specified pages,
but sooner or later other sites may do the same and the end user will be
unsatisfied. While FF may be formally clean, it would be much better if FF could
do better than just render "exactly as these sites explicitly request". In these
cases "explicitly" may not really be what is meant by the site, and some
intelligent interpretation can be helpful to overcome incomplete or incorrect
explicit specification.

After all, IE does manage to do better rendering than FF.
The whole point of current web layout technologies is that they allow a site to
clearly request a rendering. Trying to second guess a site that requests a
specific rendering would merely break sites that _are_ trying for something you
didn't expect -- something IE does with depressing regularity. So no, we're not
going to follow IE's lead here.
Since there's no way the sfx and mozilla update bugs are going to be fixed by
the same patch. (they're different codebases, and I'm not even sure SFX is in
CVS yet. ) I'm going to move this bug to update. A seperate bug should be filed
(if one doesn't exist already) for the spreadfirefox.com problems.

There are existing evangelism bugs on spreadfirefox.com, last I checked, and I
believe I sent the webmaster an email about it once.
SpreadFirefox has apparently recoded its pages, which now display correctly.

This bug can be considered resolved in light of the previous comments.

per comment 6 and this bug's product, it's an update bug. therefore,
spreadfirefox changes to not affect it. reopening...

It fixes the 'border drawn over image' rendering bug visible in the plugin
page. It incidentally removes an invalid style rule (text-align: top).

After the adobe update, which is clear, there seems to be an overlay of other
text which makes the rest of the page unreadable

While the Adobe update may be clear (not to me), the issue is not.

The site which caused opening this bug in the first place -
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=forum/51 - again displays today in an
inacceptable way on 800x600.
