So what are the steps to reproduce, exactly?
(Q1) Who wrote "smtp:gashev@zahav.net.il" in To: field?

RFC 2822 says: ( http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2822.html )
 to            = "To:" address-list CRLF
   address-list  = (address *("," address)) / obs-addr-list
     address       = mailbox / group
       mailbox       = name-addr / addr-spec
         name-addr     = [display-name] angle-addr
           display-name  = phrase
           angle-addr    = [CFWS] "<" addr-spec ">" [CFWS] / obs-angle-addr
             addr-spec      = local-part "@" domain
               (Definition of local-part & domain is omitted,)
               (but "smtp:gashev" is not valid local-part.   )
             obs-angle-addr = [CFWS] "<" [obs-route] addr-spec ">" [CFWS]
               obs-route       = [CFWS] obs-domain-list ":" [CFWS]
                 obs-domain-list = "@" domain *(*(CFWS / "," ) [CFWS] "@" domain)
       group         = display-name ":" [mailbox-list / CFWS] ";" [CFWS]
         mailbox-list  = (mailbox *("," mailbox)) / obs-mbox-list
           obs-mbox-list =  1*([mailbox] [CFWS] "," [CFWS]) [mailbox]
   obs-addr-list   = 1*([address] [CFWS] "," [CFWS]) [address]

If "group" format, To: is to be "smtp:gashev@zahav.net.il;".
If "addr-spec" format of "mailbox", To: is to be "gashev@zahav.net.il".

2) Who converted "smtp:gashev@zahav.net.il" to "sgashev@zahav.net.il"?

To know this, SMTP protocol log is required to see what string is sent as
recipient by Thunderbird.
Get protocol log and attach log file to this bug(don't paste long data.)
See http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp for
protocol log.
Do not forget to change "protocol:5" to "SMTP:5" when SMTP.
Please note that log file is overlayed on restart.

How did you create the mail?
What software was used to invoke Mozilla mail&news via. MAPI?
What link(probably mailto: link) was used to invoke Mozilla mail&news via. MAPI?

MAPI?

A 3rd party software which calls MAPISendMail function. One of the structures
supplied to it is MapiRecipDesc
( http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-
us/mapi/html/8817f92f-9e22-405f-abdc-c4723350d7b7.asp ) It clearly states that
the format in which e-mail address is supplied should be in format
SMTP:M@X.COM

What software?

Same question again.
How did you create the mail by Mozilla mail&news using the third party software?
 - You clicked "mailto:" link or linklified mail address in text on the software,
   then Mozilla was invoked.
 - Or by other way?
   For example, the software uses MS Outlook Express address book or his own,
   and you choosed members in the address book, then Mozilla was invoked
   according to your request(or setup) to send mail using Mozilla.

By the way, why you still don't answer to Boris Zbarsky's question in comment
#1, "what are the steps to reproduce, exactly?"
My "How did you create the mail?" is a part of Boris's question to you.
Why should we ask you same question again and again?
"To: smtp:gashev@zahav.net.il" problem when MAPI sounds Bug 259549.
Depends on: 244222
Unable to reproduce.
Thanks.
