Details

Right now on *NIX platforms when a user runs Netscape 4.x for the first time the
default ~/.netscape profile dir is created "silently" and netscape starts
(without any profile wizards). I think that Mozilla should act in the same way
on *NIX platforms. When a user runs mozilla the first time a default profile is
created (I'm guessing ~/.mozilla/MozProfile/) without prompting and a less
advanced user could start surfing right away. A more advanced user would of
course still have the option of several profiles but the average user wouldn't
need to understand them. I hope I'm making some sense here, if not, ask me for
clarification =)
this is a back end issue. reassigning to stevey to see if he knows. ;)

If there are no 4.x profiles to migrate, then this is what should already be
happening... Bhuvan, can you verify?

I tried to reproduce a scenario where there are no profiles to migrate, and
mozilla is started for the first time by a user, by doing the following:

1) cd ~
2) mkdir backup
3) mv .netscape backup/
4) mv .mozilla backup/
5) mozilla

Result: mozilla starts and gives me the "create new profile" dialog.

Also, if there are no mozilla profiles but there are old 4.x profiles to
migrate, shouldn't the profile manager come up instead of the profile creation
wizard?
We are throwing the create profile wizard to create a fresh 5.x profile. The 4x
information at this point is getting across only when -installer option is used
with mozilla. Creating a silent profile when no 4.x or 5.x profiles is now
considered as enhancement. Marking this post-beta (M15). For now, we let users
see the create profile so that they know what's happening as they start the
browser fresh and give them a chance to create profile with the name of their
choice.
