Details

If you set TLS to NO, but specify a username for SMTP and check "use name and
password" - sending is not authenticated.
Setting to "TLS, if available" or TLS makes things work.
Don't know how about SSL.
Norbert, are you sure that the server your're using accepts SMTP authentication
without TLS?

Could you provide more details (like what happens and what you expect to happen)?

Please see http://www.mozilla.org/quality/bug-writing-guidelines.html for what
information to write in a bug report to get it fixed more quickly.
Related to bug 276332?
I checked that at home. It not worked at office, where SMTP server accepted all
connections also those without TLS from LAN.
There is however different configuration for WAN, which does not accept auth
without TLS.

Sorry for any inconvenience. I do know the guidelines. I just missed the idea of
different configuration for LAN and WAN in SMTP.
