uname -a
  Linux cs4 2.6.9-lc14 #1 Mon Nov 22 17:51:15 PST 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Firefox repeatedly runs fine as root (was installed as root).
The segfault is reproducible for two other users.
Occurs even when removing old ~/.mozilla directory

I have 30MB core file.
This repeated 126 times before seg fault.
  *** loading the extensions datasource

Seg fault also occurs when running rh9.0:
  Linux cs4 2.4.20-6 #1 Thu Feb 27 10:06:59 EST 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
  Output and backtrace are similar.

Summary: GConf Error: ... Too many open files → GConf Error: ... Too many open files; segfault
What did you do to produce this fault?

Is there a receipe for its reproduction?
> What did you do to produce this fault?

Installed firefox as root
Ran firefox as root (no problem)
Ran firefox as non-root
  /usr/local/firefox/firefox
Segfaulted before main window appears i.e. before any interaction.

This *was* reproducible.

> Is there a receipe for its reproduction?

Now when running firefix
 /usr/local/firefox/firefox
I get the following:

*** loading the extensions datasource
*** ExtensionManager:_updateManifests: no access privileges to application
directory, skipping.
*** loading the extensions datasource
*** ExtensionManager:_updateManifests: no access privileges to application
directory, skipping.

and firefox runs successfully.

I didn't do anything to change permissions.

Is there a directory/files that you would like me to change
permission on and re-run firefox to see if it fails again.

I have mozilla 1.73 installed.

I run mozilla as:
pushd /usr/local/mozilla > /dev/null
./mozilla &

Are there any mozilla directories/files you would like me to check.
Perhaps firefox is accessing some mozilla files?

After writting above the following occured to me and I tried running firefox
after exiting gnome.

I was running gnome on display 1 while running firefox on display 0 under fvwm.
When I killed gnome (and X on 1), firefox ran OK without the ... no access
privileges ... messages.

Hmm. I wonder if the interaction of gnome and firefox (under fvwm) has anything
to do with the segfault.

I had run gnome so .gconf and .gconfd existed in ~.
I installed and ran firefox (under fvwm), I think, without gnome running.
Perhaps firefox accessed gnome files that were in an inconsistent state.
Running firefox with gnome active made these file inaccessable?
After exiting gnome, perhaps the .gconf* files were consistent?

Thank you.

You may have to wait for someone who is running a development
version on linux to come along. If you think that it is a
permissions problem then you could use strace to identify which
files were accessed before the crash.

If you are able to review the Firefox source, you might be able
to identify a call to a GTK library where either the result
or the parameters are not checked ...

Is there an FAQ for gconf and "Too many open files"? (Or even a
dup in Bugzilla)

Is certainly looks as though there is a defect in Firefox,
(maybe only obvious in your set-up) but
I doubt that I am going to be much help in locating it.
